Once in a while I like to get out of my studio and work on large-scale community projects. If you’re an organization looking to do a community project, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

New York Cares Day Mural 2013

For the 2013 New York Cares Day, I painted a mural for P.S. 214 in Brooklyn. The theme they gave me was “Forest”. Since it was such a broad theme, I decided to give myself a story line, just so I could narrow down what I wanted to sketch. At first I started sketching jungle animals (tigers and monkeys), but I thought it’d be more fun for the kids and the volunteers to do monsters instead.

I wanted to make a mural that kids can interact with — where they get to be a part of the world of the mural as they walk or stand in front of it.

So I came up with the idea of “hiding in plain sight.”

New York Cares Day Mural 2014

In 2014, I got to design another mural for New York Cares. The school wanted an underwater themed mural. On New York Cares Day, a bunch of volunteers showed up at Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School to help paint the wall. We pulled the entire thing together in the last 30 minutes.

The school had 6 cans of orange paint and only 1 can of blue. In retrospect, that wasn't such a bad thing, I’d never make an orange underwater scene otherwise.
