These series of paintings is playing with the idea of originality. First I painted two paintings which are faithful replicas of two master paintings, one by John Singer Sargent, the other by Renoir. After creating these copies, I created another set of paintings, using the same composition and style, while substituting the subjects of each painting with a cartoon character, for Sargent’s painting I replaced his wife with Lola Bunny and for the Renoir piece, I replace the girl with the hat with Yosemite Sam. So which one is the original? After all I did paint all 4 paintings. Are the ones with Lola Bunny and Yosemite Sam original even if I use the same styles and compositions as the original ones?
